Q:
What is C-41
processed film?
A: C-41 processed film is not True B&W film. It is a B&W film that is processed in C-41 chemicals (color chemicals). Basically it is color film with no color. It does not have the same tonal range as true B&W film. The C-41 processed films were created so that stores that have one hour labs like Eckards, Walgreens, Cosco, and Sam's could sell you a film that they could process in their own lab. These quickie labs don't want to sell you True B&W film because they are not able to process it and so they wont get your repeat business. In our opinion, it is a film that was created for convenience not for quality. If you would like to see a list of C-41 processed B&W films as well as True B&W films click here.
