Q: What is dust spotting?

A: When a photographic print is exposed sometimes dust gets on the paper and causes small white specks or dots to appear on the print. To remove these white specks we retouch the photographic print with spot tone. This process is called dust spotting.

Dust spotting is only for white specks on a print. If their are black specks or spots, that means that there is a scratch of blemish on the negative. This situation allows light to shine through during the exposure and causes a black spot on the final print. This is not something that can be dust spotted. If there are blemishes on the negative we can make a high resolution scan and retouch the damaged area and then print the image digitally.
