Q:
What is the difference between a toned print and a non-toned print? A: Toning a print can add a warm feel to the overall effect of the photograph. There are many different terms to indicate that you want a toned print. Some of the terms that are most commonly used are Sepia Toned, Brown Toned and Selenium Toned. All of these names refer to a particular type of toner. Sepia Toner and Kodak Brown Toner will both produce a warm brown tone to the paper. We prefer to use the Kodak Brown Toner. The reason we like it is because it is a two step process that does not require a bleach process. Sepia Toner uses a bleach process which can be quite toxic. We find we get very good results with the Kodak Brown Toner without the possible long term effects that bleach can have on our lungs. Below is an example of a toned print using Kodak Brown Toner and a print that has not been toned.

Selenium
Toner is normally used to extend the archival life of a photograph. It is mostly
used with Fiber Base Prints that are going to be displayed for shows or exhibition.
Selenium Toner does not have a color and thus does very little to change the
overall tonal appearance of the print.

Toning is
only available on Fiber Base prints. We do not offer toning on RC papers because
the paper does not hold up well in the longer wash that is required for toning.
